look 'closely' at the edges on the maple in that stack and you can see that I have an alignment issue on my TS.

I'm trying to figure out Where the problem is though...

when I start a cut, it goes fairly smooth until about 20" into the cut, at which point i need to Both slow down and increase the pressure I'm pushing with... to the point of popping a breaker if I push too hard/fast. taking it slowly, I can get through, but with burnt edges. I've switched blades, both of mine are either 'in dire need of sharpening....' or something is out of whack.

I've checked and as near as I can tell the blade is parallel with the fence, and with the miter slots.

now this is the 'best' evidence I've got that the blade and fence are parallel.. I don't have a gauge, so I've used a square, marking a tooth and measuring distance fore and aft to the miter slot and the fence.

HOwever in mid cut, I'm getting a gap:

and yes, the board itself is straight as near as I can tell.

what am I missing in the equation?

Social bullying prevalent in children's television

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A new research study led by an Indiana University professor has found that social bullying is just as prevalent in children's television as depictions of physical aggression.

The study, "Mean on the Screen: Social Aggression in Programs Popular With Children," which appears in the Journal of Communication, found that 92 percent of the top 50 program for children between the ages of 2 and 11 showed characters involved in social aggression.

On average, there were 14 different incidents of social aggression per hour, or once every four minutes.

While physical aggression in television for children has been extensively documented, this is believed to be among the first studies to analyze children's exposure to behaviors such as cruel gossiping and manipulation of friendship.

"Social aggression was more likely to be enacted by an attractive perpetrator, to be featured in a humorous context and neither rewarded or punished," wrote Nicole Martins, assistant professor of telecommunications in the IU College of Arts and Sciences. "In these ways, social aggression on television poses more of a risk for imitation and learning than do portrayals of physical aggression."

Martins, the lead researcher on the study, and Barbara Wilson, professor of communication at the University of Illinois, conducted a content analysis of the 50 most popular children's shows according to Nielsen Media Research from December 2006 to March 2007. In all, 150 television shows were viewed and analyzed.

Careful attention was given to what was portrayed in the cases of social aggression, whether the behavior was rewarded or punished, justified or committed by an attractive perpetrator.

The findings suggest that some of the ways in which social aggression is contextualized make these depictions particularly problematic for young viewers.

"These findings should help parents and educators recognize that there are socially aggressive behaviors on programs children watch," Martins said. "Parents should not assume that a program is OK for their child to watch simply because it does not contain physical violence.

"Parents should be more aware of portrayals that may not be explicitly violent in a physical sense but are nonetheless anti-social in nature," Martins added.

The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents -- 78 percent -- were verbal: words to hurt the self-esteem or social standing of another character on the program. The most common types of social aggression were insults (52 percent) or name-calling (25 percent). Other common types of negative behavior shown were teasing (10 percent) and sarcasm (9 percent).

Only about 20 percent of all socially aggressive incidents were non-verbal in nature and typically employed a mean face (36 percent) or laughter meant to lower the self-esteem of another character (31 percent). Rolling eyes, finger pointing and simply ignoring the other person also were common.

"We also coded whether social aggression was directly perpetrated at the target -- such as making a mean face -- or indirectly perpetrated behind the target's back -- such as spreading a rumor," the authors wrote. "The vast majority of socially aggressive incidents (86 percent) were enacted directly at the target. Rarely were socially aggressive incidents perpetrated behind the target's back."

While previous research has demonstrated that gossip is one of the most common forms of social aggression in real life, it was rarely seen in children's television shows analyzed for the study. Martins and Wilson concluded that gossip, due to its indirect nature, may have been seen by program producers as being too subtle for advancing a story's plot.

Restaurant Review: Breakfast At Wahaca | Londonist

Wahaca on Charlotte Street is the latest in London?s seemingly endless Mexican restaurant wave. It?s also the eighth branch of Masterchef alumnus Thomasina Miers? burgeoning mini-empire, and to keep things interesting the owners have introduced a few new things to tempt Fitzrovians through the door: a late-night mezcal bar, a takeaway lunch counter, and a breakfast menu.

Dining at Wahaca can occasionally be a tiring experience (it?s one of those restaurants where eager-beaver staff will often ask ask ?have you been here before?? then attempt to ?explain? the menu), but the waitress on our early morning visit was relaxed, letting us order without interference and making a few recommendations when asked. It was a quiet morning, which might have helped.

The breakfast lived up to the early promise. The huevos rancheros were excellent: eggs served on blue corn tacos (a protein- and antioxidant-rich variant of the familiar yellow ones) and liberally spread with a green tomatillo salsa that had a snap of heat to it (a side order of avocado helped to temper the piquancy). Less impressive was the breakfast burrito ? a heaving flour tortilla stuffed with egg, spinach, cheese and bacon ? which was a little bland, requiring liberal dashings of habanero salsa to elicit any kind of response from the taste buds. Other items on the menu include a breakfast torta (a sandwich made using a hollowed-out brioche bun stuffed with ), ?Mexican eggs? (scrambled with onions, chili and refried beans) and baked goods including donuts and banana bread.

Wahaca has competition in the local area, not only from established Mexican fast food places like Benito?s Hat and El Burrito, but from the many other restaurants that line Charlotte Street. Yet by serving a good, well-priced breakfast, and doing it early (opening at 8.30am Mon-Fri) the newcomer has made a promising start. If they can keep the service sweet and simple when the crowds move in, then we could easily become regular visitors.

Breakfast for two, with two mains, a coffees, an horchata (a rice-based cinnamon flavoured drink), a side of banana bread and service, came to around ?18.

Wahaca is at 19-23 Charlotte Street, W1T 1RL.

Biologist discovers mammal with salamander-like regenerative abilities

Thursday, September 27, 2012

A small African mammal with an unusual ability to regrow damaged tissues could inspire new research in regenerative medicine, a University of Florida study finds.

For years biologists have studied salamanders for their ability to regrow lost limbs. But amphibian biology is very different than human biology, so lessons learned in laboratories from salamanders are difficult to translate into medical therapies for humans. New research in the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature describes a mammal that can regrow new body tissues following an injury. The African spiny mouse could become a new model for research in regenerative medicine.

"The African spiny mouse appears to regenerate ear tissue in much the way that a salamander regrows a limb that has been lost to a predator," said Ashley W. Seifert, a postdoctoral researcher in UF's biology department. "Skin, hair follicles, cartilage -- it all comes back."

That's not the case in other mammals, he said. Usually scar tissue forms to fill the gap created by a wound.

The spiny mouse also regrows tissue on its main body when injured but not as completely as it does in its ears. "On their backs, they regrow hair follicles and skin, but the muscle beneath the skin doesn't regenerate," Seifert said.

Seifert was studying scar-free healing in amphibians when a colleague told him that a small rodent he had observed in Africa seemed capable of autotomy, a defense mechanism whereby the animal self-amputates a body part to escape a predator.

"Autotomy in skinks, geckos and some salamanders is well known," Seifert said. "But it is very rare in mammals, and so far we've only seen it in a few rodents that can jettison their tail."

Seifert's colleague said that the African spiny mouse appeared to have tear-away skin that allowed it to slip a predator's grasp. The notion was interesting enough to send Seifert packing to the Mpala Research Centre near Nairobi, Kenya.

In Nairobi, Seifert was able to document the first known case of skin autotomy in a mammal. But it was how the animals' injuries appeared to be healing that really got his attention.

Seifert used a 4mm biopsy punch, about the size of a large BB, to puncture holes in the ears of the mice to see if the animal showed regenerative capabilities.

"The results were astonishing," he said. "The various tissues in the ear grew back through formation of blastema-like structures -- the same sort of biological process that a salamander uses to regenerate a severed limb."

Ken Muneoka, a Tulane University professor of cell and molecular biology who was not involved with the study, agrees that Seifert's findings are important.

"It could represent a new model system for skin wound healing and tissue regeneration in humans," he said.

'Looper' takes audiences on a thrill ride

Sony Pictures

Joseph Gordon-Levitt in "Looper."

By Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

REVIEW: "Looper" is a clever, entertaining science fiction thriller that neatly blurs the line between suicide and murder. An existential conundrum wrapped in a narrowly conceived yarn about victims sent back in time to be bumped off by assassins called loopers, Rian Johnson's third and most ambitious feature keeps the action popping while sustaining interest in the long arc of a story about a man assigned to kill the 30 years-older version of himself.

A lively, high-profile choice to open this year's Toronto International Film Festival, this Sony release co-starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same role should chalk up sizable returns in the wake of its Sept. 28 theatrical bow.

VIDEO: "Looper" star Joseph Gordon-Levitt on getting kicked in the head by Bruce Willis

Probably the shakiest aspect of Johnson's original screenplay is what it asks the viewer to buy about the future: A mere 62 years from now, in 2074, time travel has become possible, but such a momentous breakthrough is limited to serving as a body-disposal system. Under the prevailing authority, time jumping is strictly outlawed because of its potential for messing with history. A large criminal mob, run by an overlord called The Rainmaker, defiantly uses it but only as a vehicle for assassination, with ?loopers? -- disreputable gunmen living in 2044 -- laying in wait for people to execute so no bodies or other evidence can be found in the future.

Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt chat about playing a younger and older version of the same character in "Looper."

But the premise is established in nifty fashion; the doomed, hooded with hands bound behind them, suddenly materialize in an empty field, and the looper immediately blows him away with his blunderbuss. One such executioner is Joe (Gordon-Levitt), a retro-looking hipster who drives a very old red Miata and wears ties, ?a 20th century affectation? that offends his crankily genial boss, Abe (Jeff Daniels). If he can get out of this racket, he says he'd like to go to France, which earns him further scorn from the older man; ?I'm from the future, you should go to China,? he scolds.

PHOTOS: Movies with different actors in the same role

Backed by a cynically confessional voice-over track from Joe that is not as self-consciously hardboiled as the commentary Gordon-Levitt read for Johnson in "Brick" seven years ago, Looper?mostly is set in a seedy metropolis that doesn't look all that different from sketchy neighborhoods in some big cities today; there are derelicts, bombed-out buildings, ruined cars and enough other signs of urban ills to suggest that, in Johnson's view, things will just gradually decline over the next three decades.

Joe hangs out in clubs, sees a sexy woman (Piper Perabo) who works in one of them and tries to help a friend and fellow looper, Seth (Paul Dano), who's imminently endangered by a new development that's come down from on high: They're ?closing all the loops,? meaning they're sending the ?future selves? of all the loopers back to be killed.

Almost immediately, Joe is in the same jam. When, a half-hour into the film, he goes to the field to do his next job, the guy who pops up to be shot is not hooded. Joe's hesitation allows the older man to escape, and it's clear who he is: It's Joe as his older self. And, for his failure to kill him, young Joe is in a pile of trouble with Abe and his ?gats,? first-class hired guns.

STORY: "Looper" interactive trailer reveals new interviews, behind-the-scenes footage?

When the two Joes finally sit down -- across from each other in a diner in the middle of nowhere -- there's no doubt they're working at cross purposes: Young Joe is determined to kill his older self, while old Joe is dead set on tracking down and taking out The Rainmaker, who would be a little kid in 2044, so his late wife won't die at his hands after all.

The biggest problem facing the makers of "Looper" is how to make the audience believe that the trim, long-faced Gordon-Levitt could somehow change so much in 30 years that he would look like the thicker-built and shorter-nosed Willis. The solution lay in altering the younger actor's appearance, imperceptibly at first, but gradually to morph his dark eyes into Willis' gray-green and to reshape his nose and eyebrows, either with makeup or digitally or perhaps both. At first, the effect is a bit odd, and you can't quite put your finger on what's off; then it feels downright weird to be looking at a version of Gordon-Levitt who is no longer the actor you've known for a few years now.

This is especially noticeable during the film's second half, much of which takes place at young Joe's place of refuge, the isolated home of feisty young farmer and single mom Sara (Emily Blunt), who has an unusually gifted son, Cid (Pierce Gagnon). Even as the temperature is kept at a low simmer, the film's pace deliberately is slowed here to develop some intimacy between these two isolated people and give some screen time to the kid, who pretty obviously will provide the reason for old Joe to eventually head for the farm. The eventual ending is great, the resolution to the tricky time maneuvering very impressively worked out.

VIDEO: "Looper" trailer puts Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a tough spot: Killing Bruce Willis

Shot mostly in Louisiana, with a bit done in Shanghai, the film looks tightly made on a budget but sacrifices nothing for that; the world depicted looks dirty, dangerous and ramshackle, with a few high-tech touches here and there.

Their physical disparity notwithstanding, Gordon-Levitt and Willis both come across strongly, while Blunt effectively reveals Sara's tough and vulnerable sides. Daniels is particularly amusing as the garrulous old enforcer holding down the future's outpost in the past.

Assange: Obama exploiting Arab Spring in campaign

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange accused President Barack Obama on Thursday of seeking to exploit the Arab uprisings for personal political gain, as he addressed a sideline meeting of the U.N. General Assembly via videolink from his hideout at a London embassy.

The Australian activist has sheltered inside Ecuador's embassy in London ? beyond the reach of British police ? since June 19, when he sought refuge after he exhausted all legal routes to avoid extradition to Sweden for questioning over sex crimes allegations.

Assange and his supporters claim that the Swedish sex case is part of a Washington-orchestrated plot to make him stand trial in the United States over his work with WikiLeaks, which has published thousands of secret U.S. diplomatic cables and other documents. Both Sweden and the U.S. reject that claim.

At a sideline meeting organized by Ecuador, the activist attempted to draw parallels between himself and the instigators of the Arab Spring ? claiming that they had all been let down by Obama.

"It must come as a surprise to Tunisians for Barack Obama to say the U.S. supported the forces of change in Tunisia," Assange said, speaking from Ecuador's tiny apartment-sized London mission.

He claimed that uprisings across the Arab world had been inspired, in part, by his organization's disclosures about despotic rulers, including Tunisia's deposed President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

Assange claimed that Obama ? whose administration he accuses of building a criminal case against WikiLeaks and of harassing its staff ? was seeking to exploit the reforms of the Arab Spring during his reelection campaign.

"Mohamed Bouazizi did not set himself on fire so that Barack Obama could get reelected," Assange told the meeting, referring to the 2011 self-immolation by a Tunisian fruit vendor which sparked the uprising that toppled Ben Ali.

Assange, who made no reference to the Swedish sexual misconduct case as he addressed diplomats, also accused Britain and Sweden of failing to provide guarantees that he would not face extradition to the U.S. to help preserve close military and intelligence links with Washington.

Both European nations insist that Assange must be sent to Sweden under international and European law, and that they cannot legally offer any pledges to refuse a possible future U.S. extradition request.

Ecuador's President Rafael Correa has granted Assange asylum, but if he steps outside the country's London embassy he will be arrested by police who surround the building.

The case has left Britain, Ecuador and Sweden at a diplomatic impasse. Foreign ministers from Quito and London will meet Thursday in New York, as Assange marks 100 days holed up in the embassy.

Ecuador's foreign minister Ricardo Patino told the meeting that he believed there were "many ways to achieve a solution," without specifying potential routes. British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Tuesday that he saw "no sign of any break through" in the saga.

Britain's foreign ministry said it was "committed to seeking a diplomatic solution" with Ecuador, but insisted that it was legally obliged to send Assange to Sweden.

Why NFL referees must be model judges

The 'bad' NFL referee call in the 'Monday Night Football' game between the Seattle Seahawks and the Green Bay Packers puts a spotlight on those among us whom we elevate as truth tellers and judges.

By the Monitor's Editorial Board / September 26, 2012

A referee indicates a Seattle Seahawks game-winning touchdown over the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter of their NFL Monday night football game.

Even those who don?t follow sports have likely felt the collective outrage of football fans over a referee?s ?bad call? in Monday night?s matchup between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Some outrage mattered more than most.

?Terrible,? chimed in President Obama.

Bring back the ?experienced referees,? added Mitt Romney, referring to the National Football League?s lockout of its regular refs in a contract dispute and the use of less-qualified refs.

The referee?s call that gave the Seahawks a winning touchdown was almost like hearing that the Supreme Court had ruled the sky was pink. Or that NASA had announced that the moon was made of cheese. Or that the United Nations had decided to let Cuba join its Human Rights Council. (Actually, it did.)

Truth isn?t a relative concept to sports fans, just as it isn?t to most everyone else. They demand that those who officiate a game make decisions based on objective facts. They expect their referees to be neutral, observant, trustworthy ? not biased, sloppy, or arbitrary.

Yet referees, like baseball umpires or Olympic judges, have it rough in the era of instant replays and YouTube. Their mistakes are magnified while their good calls are not appreciated. Athletes, too, know better these days how to break a rule with stealth in order to win. Games are faster. Fans are more alert to?unfair? calls.

Yet even as the public demands credible impartiality in many arenas, not just in sports, there is also a growing suspicion that truth cannot be really known and that those we set up to judge us will always bring hidden subjectivity.

The justices on the Supreme Court, for example, are often presumed to put ideology or personal views into their roles as arbiters of the law. Their critics divide them into defined camps, conservative or liberal, activist or strict constructionist.

Since the 1920s, legal scholars have questioned the ideal of judges as impartial and independent, despite the advice of Alexander Hamilton, who said that the judiciary must operate with ?neither Force nor Will, but merely judgment.?

Chief Justice John Roberts was ridiculed during his 2005 confirmation hearings for saying judges must act like a home-plate baseball umpire, merely calling balls and strikes. ?Umpires don?t make the rules; they apply them,? he said. ?They make sure everybody plays by the rules.?

Later, his view was backed up by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who stated during her hearings that judges should not ?rely on what?s in their heart? or apply feelings to facts.

Yet a desire for truth in black and white does often run in gray, as when a football referee must decide whether a defender actually hindered a pass receiver or merely made ?incidental contact.?

When we elevate individuals to be judges over us, we are asking them to both know the truth and, when the truth isn?t clear, make a judgment call.

It?s a balancing act that even the best sports referee or high court justice finds daunting. When they falter, however, they are instantly reminded of a basic compulsion in humanity for knowing the truth.

Just ask the ref who made the call for the Seahawks.

Our image reveals itself outside of ourselves and, in this respect, more experienced as a draft that must constantly correct that must erase what we perceive as imperfections and need Why not, shape with tattoos, piercings and other practices.

The plastic, the equivalent of a

In our society, there is no doubt that the look is worn on the body is responsible for cultural performances and in this sense has nothing spontaneous. It transmits a social imaginary beauty. The media also contribute significantly to constantly conveying an image of the stereotypical body and tending towards an ideal that stirs in people the desire to change the image of their own body.Immediately after World War II, the first campaigns by aging yet natural deformity, are emerging and their target is the first woman.

tatto-s

This economic market of beauty is now very promising. We live now in a society where physical appearance is paramount and if it is too far from the conventional standards, it suffers the unfortunate consequences, sometimes leading to social marginalization. Indeed, an individual with a physical hand felt unconventional disadvantaged on the labor market. There are no exaggeration to say that our society has made of plastic beauty equivalent of a diploma. Add this materialistic reductionism can be very dangerous for some people because it is undeniable that the image is bound to change over time, as anyone who identifies himself in the image of his body can only end in hatred and self-loathing.

Plastic surgery and distinction

The name ?plastic surgery? is a general designation for all interventions that alter, repair or beautify the integument and forms of the human body. It is therefore a distinction between cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery, the first passing of the ?normal? ?beautiful? and the second of ?abnormal? or pathological to ?normal?. Thus, the surgery tends to remove or reduce such damage in the body (burns, bites, diseases such as cancer), this function has surgery to repair a defect and tends towards the best possible improvement. Cosmetic surgery, in turn, is driven by aging, pregnancy or non-pathological misfortunes, not by the effects of a disease or other pathology.

This surgery is for many people the answer they are the dictates of society. Namely: in France, 350 000 procedures are conducted annually, with about three out of four women. Today, no stratum seems untouched by this phenomenon facing a prefabricated ideal, which is coveted by individuals younger and younger. United States, for example, 220,000 people under age 18 had already undergone plastic surgery in 2003, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Physical beauty and its ideal by the media has been so extensive that there is now what we call the aesthetic tourism, as well as specialized agencies of the niche, which offer their clients formulas containing living tourism and a medical procedure! These surgical practices raise many questions, because of physical standards dealt out by the company and relayed by the media, racial problems, economic problems, the risks of eugenics, endangering the health.

Zombie bees spread to Washington state

By NBC News and the Associated Press

The zombees are spreading.

Or rather, ?zombie bees? ? honey bees that have been inhabited by tiny flies that cause them to abandon their hive at night and lurch about erratically before dying.?

"They basically eat the insides out of the bee," said San Francisco State University biologist John Hafernik.

Hafernik first discovered zombie bees in 2008 in California and now uses a website to recruit citizen scientists to track the infection across the country.

The zombee condition recently crept into Washington state. Novice beekeeper Mark Hohn spotted bees jerking about outside his suburban Seattle home.

ZombeeWatch.org

ZombeeWatch.org, managed by John Hafernik at San Francisco State University, solicits information from citizen scientists, beekeepers and enthusiasts to track zombie bees.

"I joke with my kids that the zombie apocalypse is starting at my house," Hohn said.

Hohn collected several of the corpses and popped them into a plastic bag. About a week later, he had evidence his bees were infected: the pupae of parasitic flies. They were the first to be confirmed in Washington state, The Seattle Times reported.

The infection could be another threat to bees needed to pollinate crops. Hives have been failing in recent years due to a mysterious ailment called colony collapse disorder, which causes all the adult honey bees in a colony to suddenly die.

Still, there?s no evidence that the parasitic fly is to blame, said Steve Sheppard, chairman of the entomology department at Washington State University.

Related: Fly parasite turns honeybees into zom-bees

The fly-bee relationship is a strange one: The flies, discovered in Maine in 1924, are native to North America. Honey bees ? what scientists call the ?beneficial insect? ? are not.

So why haven?t the flies feasted on honey bees before now?

?We don?t really know if this is something the flies have figured out recently or if it?s been under the radar,? Hafernik told NBC News.

It?s possible this behavior has gone undetected ? after all, infected bees abandon their hives at night, when beekeepers aren?t around to notice.

But Hafernik has trouble believing that dedicated beekeepers and scientists have gone decades without noticing infected bees.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, Hafernik said, up to 78 percent of hives are infected, and a number are infected across the Pacific Northwest. Scientists conducted DNA analysis on bees found traces of parasites in bees in South Dakota; there have also been cases in New York, Minnesota and Colorado.?

?It could be that not all honey bee strains are susceptible to the fly at the same rate ? there could be some genetics among the honeybees that could be brought to bear,? Hafernik said.

He hopes that scientists and beekeepers will send information to his website, ZombeeWatch.org, so that his team may better research the problem.

Hafernik said that those suspecting zombie bees should isolate the bee for about a week as Hohn did ? the bee will die within a day or two if infected. After five to seven days, maggots will have finished their feeding and emerge from the bee?s head ? those look like small, brown, crystal-shaped pupae. Take photos, he asks, and send them along.

Hafernik will also be taking notes. After a recent vacation, he found that a colony of infected bees had moved into a crevice next to his house.

?They?re now living between the walls of my house,? he said. ?I decided to leave them. For the moment, we?re coexisting peacefully.??

NBC's Isolde Raftery contributed reporting.

Fall Has Arrived {Get Out the Sweaters!} : Ideas for Women Home ...

On September 22nd fall?officially?arrived. In many parts of the country the weather has already begun to cool a bit. Here in Georgia the leaves are already starting to turn and fall. That means it is the perfect time to start going through all those fall and winter clothing that you put away last year.

Take a week or a weekend (depending on how much you have to go through) and dig out all the heavier clothing. Inspect each and every piece for holes, rips, tears, and any other defects that may have happened last year and you didn?t notice. Those that you find decide whether you will get rid of them or repair them.

Next have each member of the family try on their clothing to make sure it still fits. Anything that doesn?t fit anymore could be placed in a pile for someone who it does fit to choose from. If no one can wear or wants anything in the pile then it can be donated to charity.

Finally you want to wash and clean each and every piece. Be sure not to hand dry sweaters but rather place them on a rack laying flat to dry. Once everything is put away you are ready for the new season and have an idea of what each family may need.

Rachel McAdams Does Evil Well, Brian De Palma Says

Brian De Palma has never shied away from dark subject matters, so when footage from his latest film, "Passion," featured Rachel McAdams and Noomi Rapace flirting with each other and horrific acts of violence, no one seemed particularly shocked. It was De Palma being De Palma. But when MTV News' Josh Horowitz caught up with [...]

Use Dry Erase Crayon to Label Leftovers in the Fridge or Freezer [Household]

Use Dry Erase Crayon to Label Leftovers in the Fridge or Freezer Using tupperware or other reusable containers to store leftovers is a smart idea. Not labeling those containers with their contents and when you stored them is a recipe for trouble. The fix is as easy as a box of dry erase crayons?they write on plastic containers easily, clean off quickly, and make labeling your leftovers so easy you'll actually do it.

Dry erase crayons are affordable (this box of 8 at Amazon is $4), and as long as you stash one somewhere in the kitchen, you can drag it out before you stash the last of the crock pot chili in the freezer or bag up your homemade chicken broth, write the contents and the date on your tupperware container, and then put it away. The real beauty is that the dry erase crayons won't smear or smudge, and unlike grease pencils, markers, or even a bit of tape stuck to the container, the dry erase marker washes right off in the dishwasher or with a wet paper towel.

Curiosity Rover Touches 1st Martian Rock, Makes Longest Drive Yet

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity reached out and touched a Martian rock with its huge robotic arm for the first time, then took off on its longest Red Planet drive to date.

Curiosity spent the past several days investigating a strange pyramid-shaped stone named "Jake Matijevic," testing out some of the gear at the end of its 7-foot-long (2.1 meters) arm. These tools include the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS), which measures elemental composition, and the Mars Hand Lens Imager close-up camera, or MAHLI.

The rover performed these initial "contact science" operations on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 22 and 23), researchers said. Photos snapped on those days show Curiosity's arm sidled up against "Jake Matijevic," with the arm's turret obscuring most of the 16-inch-tall (25 centimeters) rock.

"I did a science! 1st contact science on rock target Jake," the Curiosity team announced Saturday (Sept. 22) via the rover's Twitter feed @MarsCuriosity, which has more than 1.1 million followers. "Here's an action shot." [Curiosity Mars Rover: 11 Amazing Facts]

Curiosity also zapped "Jake Matijevic" with the laser on its ChemCam instrument, which reads rock composition from the vaporized bits. Comparing the results should help cross-calibrate the two instruments, researchers said.

The ChemCam work wrapped up Monday (Sept. 24), at which point Curiosity embarked on a 138-foot (42 m) drive ? the longest one-day jaunt for the rover since it landed inside Mars' Gale Crater on the night of Aug. 5.

Curiosity is making its way toward a site called Glenelg, which lies 1,300 feet (400 m) from the rover's touchdown site. Before Monday's drive, the mission team had said Curiosity was about halfway to Glenelg.

Scientists will likely soon begin looking for sandy areas to try out Curiosity's scooping system for the first time. The arm will deposit bits of Martian soil into the analytical instruments on the rover's body, which are known as SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) and CheMin (short for Chemistry & Mineralogy).? ?

The first use of Curiosity's rock-boring drill, which also sits at the end of the rover's arm, will come sometime after that, researchers have said.

While team members are keen to see what Curiosity discovers at Glenelg, the $2.5 billion rover's main destination is the base of Mount Sharp. This odd mountain rises 3.4 miles (5.5 km) into the Red Planet sky from Gale Crater's center, and its foothills show signs of long-ago exposure to liquid water.

Those foothills lie about 6 miles (10 km) away from Curiosity's landing site. The rover ? whose main task is to determine if the Gale area could ever have supported microbial life ? may be ready to turn its wheels toward the interesting deposits near the end of the year, scientists have said.

The rock "Jake Matijevic" takes its name from Curiosity's surface operations systems chief engineer, who died Aug. 20 at the age of 64. Matijevic, who was based at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., also worked on all three previous Mars rovers ? Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity ? NASA officials said.

Epsom, UK (PRWEB) July 23, 2010

According to a recent global survey on the causes of data loss, Kroll Ontrack, the leading provider of data recovery, information management and legal technology products and services, found 40% of home, business, government and channel users of information technology believe human error is the leading cause of data loss, up from 11% in 2005. While hardware and software errors still account for a significant amount of believed failures, this result illustrates the perceived complexity associated with implementing and maintaining today?s storage technology.

Kroll Ontrack questioned more than 2,000 participants from 17 countries across North America, Europe and Asia Pacific to clarify the cause of their most recent data loss, and a staggering 40% of respondents believed that human error was a leading cause, even though only 27% said they could really attribute a recent loss to human error. A further 29% identified hardware/system failure as the cause of their most recent data loss, which was reported as the cause of data loss by 56% of respondents in a similar survey in 2005. Despite the reported decline in hardware/system failures, UK Ontrack Data Recovery engineers have seen consistent percentages in hardware failures over the past five years.

Data loss attributed to computer viruses and natural disasters remained honestly low. In the 2010 survey, computer viruses accounted for less than 7% of recent data loss incidents, compared to 4% in 2005. Similarly, natural disasters were responsible for 3% of incidents in 2010, versus 2% in 2005.

?While technology and technology aptitude continue to improve year over year, the reality is that hardware failures, as well as human errors, continue to be factors,? said Robert Winter, chief engineer, Ontrack Data Recovery, Kroll Ontrack. ?No one factor can ever truly be overcome, making data loss a reality. Consequently, it is not a matter of if, but rather a matter of when. As a result, businesses and home users alike cannot rely on hope as their strategy. Instead, they must take proactive measures to ensure the individuals operating the storage system have current training, working redundancies and a continuity plot that is current and accessible in the event of a loss.?

Surprisingly, while more than 90% of those surveyed have lost information, 18% ?did not know? how their data loss occurred. This demonstrates an urgent need to educate businesses and consumers broadly on data recovery causes, protection tools and strategies, as well as the recovery protocol in the event of a data loss, ensuring further hurt is not caused.

?Ultimately, we want to help users avoid the upset and frustration that can be felt as a result of data loss, especially if it involves the loss of personal data, as experienced by 63% of those we surveyed in the UK,? said Phil Bridge, managing director, Kroll Ontrack UK. ?Data loss is stressful regardless of whether it?s a home user whose data has been corrupted by a virus or a business that accidentally deletes critical files, volumes, virtual machines or a SAN LUN and there is no backup ? or worse, the backup is redundant or corrupt. Kroll Ontrack is available around the clock to remedy virtually any data loss. With unmatched experts performing virtually any type of recovery, Ontrack Data Recovery can prioritise the recovery strategy according to the most critical needs of the customer and locate specific information on used areas of the drive as well as specified file types.?

Are American voters waking up to reality about Israel and the Middle East?

Two recent events suggest that the conversation in the U.S. about Israel and the Middle East may be changing for the good.? One of them involves GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.? In a High Holy Days conference call with American Rabbis, Romney explained that the U.S. should impose "Red Lines" on Iran and that the U.S. should seek an indictment against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the United Nations Security Council for his repeated calls for Israel's annihilation:

In a High Holidays conference call for American rabbis held this evening, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney outlined his Red Lines on Iran, called for Iranian President Ahmadinejad to be indicted, and for the U.S. to treat Iran as it did apartheid South Africa.

"For me the red line is nuclear capability. We do not want them to have the capacity of building a bomb that threatens ourselves, our friends, or the world," said Romney, responding to a question from Rabbi Efrem Goldberg who asked, "your good friend Prime Minister Netanyahu says that the international community needs to draw a red line for Iran, do you agree that a red line needs to be drawn and where would you draw it?"

In this position Romney appears to have departed from a comment?he made ?recently to ABC News' George Stephanopolulos [sic]. ?When asked a similar question he said, "My red line is Iran may not have a nuclear weapon." Stephanopolulos [sic] writes, "I pointed out that President Obama also says it is unacceptable for Iran to have a nuclear weapon and asked Romney if he therefore has the same "red line" as Obama??"Yes," Romney said. The difference, Romney says, is what he would do to keep Iran from reaching the line."

Romney further called for?the implementation of?a June 2007 House of Representatives resolution that called upon the United Nations Security Council?to charge Ahmadinejad with violating the Genocide Convention by his repeated calls for Israel to be annihilated. "I think we should indict Ahmedinejad [sic] under the Genocide Convention for incitation to genocide, I think that he, and I think the diplomats of Iran should be treated like the pariah they are anywhere they go in the world, I believe that they should be treated the same way we treated South Africa during apartheid," said Romney. To date, no international legal proceedings for incitement to genocide have moved forward against the Iranian President according to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

That Ahmadinejad and his cronies are pariahs should be obvious to every informed, thinking person in the U.S.? Among other things, they are global sponsors of terrorism aimed at Israel, Jewish people, and the West; they continue to funnel money, weapons, and troops to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as he seeks to maintain his grip on power by murdering his own citizens; and they play Hezbollah like a fiddle to stir up trouble in Lebanon, Syria, and Israel.? For any one of these heinous offenses, Ahmadinejad and his bloodthirsty gang of neo-barbarians should be convicted for capital offenses and hanged from construction cranes the same way they hang innocent Iranian citizens for daring to protest government corruption.

The other change is being led by Israel.? It involves focusing attention on Jewish refugees from Arab nations following the outbreak of fighting during Israel's War of Independence in 1948.? That effort inspired Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri to fly into a maniacal tirade during which he blamed Jewish refugees for the so-called "Palestinian refugee problem". ??Abu Zuhri even went so far as to declare that the Jewish refugees were "criminals":

Hamas on Saturday denounced the Israeli call to recognize the suffering of Jewish refugees from Arab countries and their material claims the same way it acknowledges the plight of displaced Palestinians, Ma'an News Agency reported on Sunday.

Following the special gathering at the UN before Israeli officials, foreign diplomats, activists and journalists, to raise the issue of Jewish refugees, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in a statement that "those Jews are criminals rather than refugees."

He added: "Those Jews were not refugees as they claim. They were actually responsible for the displacement of the Palestinian people after they secretly migrated from Arab countries to Palestine before they expelled the Palestinians from their lands to build a Jewish state at their expense."

Speaking on behalf of the movement, Zuhri commented that it is the fault of the Jewish refugees from Arab lands who "turned the Palestinian people into refugees", Ma'an reported.

Commenting on the conference, he said: "The Hamas movement views this conference as a dangerous, unprecedented move which contributes to the falsification of history and reversing of facts."

The Jewish refugee issue deserves the attention of U.S. voters because it reveals the duplicity of Arab leaders and their stooges in the West, particularly those in the White House.? Below are facts about "Palestine" and "Palestinians" that merit scrutiny, facts with which most people are unfamiliar:

1. People we call "Palestinians" today are in large measure descendants of a hodgepodge of unruly Arabs that none of the Arab nations wanted to absorb following Israel's War of Independence in 1948, and for good reason.? For instance, Palestinians who migrated to Jordan following Israel's War of Independence created havoc for King Hussein, so he booted them out killing thousands of them in the process during Black September. ?Click here?and?here?for details.? "Palestinians" then fled to Lebanon and helped to foment the?Lebanese Civil War?which lasted for more than 15 years and cost untold more lives.

2. The Romans changed the name of Israel to Palestine following the Bar Kochba rebellion in 135 B.C.??Click here?for details.? They chose that name to insult Jewish people because the Philistines were Israel's mortal enemies.

3. Until 1948, anyone who lived in the country we call Israel today was regarded as a "Palestinian", including Jewish people.??Click here?for details.

4. The number of Jews forced out of Arab countries in 1948 was greater than the number of Arabs who chose to leave "Palestine" for what they thought would be a short time while the Arab nations "drove the Jews into the sea".? Since tiny Israel defeated the combined Arab armies, they found themselves homeless.

5. Rather than absorb the "Palestinians" who were displaced by the War of Independence, the Arab nations opted instead to set up refugee camps for them.? They did this to create squalid living conditions for "Palestinians" in hopes of garnering global support for an anti-Israel PR campaign. ?Click here?for details.? It's worth noting that Israel absorbed more than 850,000 Jewish refugees from Arab countries following the War of Independence.??Click here?for details.

6. Yasser Arafat (an Egyptian,?click here?for details) commandeered the name "Palestinian" in 1964 when he created the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).?Click here?for details.? The primary purpose of the PLO was and is to destroy Israel.?Click here?for details.

Are American voters waking up to reality?? We'll know for sure on November 6th.

NCAA Football Rankings, Week 5: Oregon Leapfrogs LSU For No. 2 Spot In Coaches' Poll

Just as they did in the Associated Press Top 25, the Oregon Ducks moved past the LSU Tigers in the USA Today Coaches' Poll to No. 2 on the strength of a victory over the previously ranked Arizona Wildcats.

Unlike in the AP Poll, however, the Ducks' margin over the Tigers is slim, as LSU trails Oregon by just 10 points. Both teams continue to chase the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide, which collected all but two of the poll's first-place votes.

LSU's victory over the Auburn Tigers proved a less than impressive result for the coaches, who voted the Tigers down from the No. 2 spot for their 12-10 victory in Jordan Hare Stadium.

Both teams enter the thick of their conference schedules moving forward and could battle for that No. 2 spot for a few weeks to come.

The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles and the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs round out the poll's top five.

ICC World T20: Zimbabwe Crash Out After Losing To South Africa

ICC World T20: Zimbabwe Crash Out After Losing To South Africa

Sep 22, 2012 -

Zimbabwe crashed out of the T20 World Cup after one of the most one-sided games in recent history, as the South Africans put up a clinical performance at Hambantota on Thursday. After having been easily brushed aside by the Lankans, the Zimbabwe side would have been expected to atleast test their opponents. That was not to be as the Proteans cantered to a ten wicket victory.

After putting their opposition into bat, South Africa wasted no time is getting a vice like grip on the match. Morne Morkel who was the best bowler in the IPL and his brother Albie skimmed the top three batsmen for next to nothing, to leave them reeling at 16/3 in the fifth over. Craig Ervine with an innings of 37 was the only one to put up some resistance, as the rest of the batting order was rocked time and again by Jacques Kallis. The Zimbabweans did bat through their entire quota of overs, but only managed a paltry 93 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Kallis was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets for 15 runs.

In reply, the Proteans did not waste any time to make an announcement to the other sides in the tournament. The burly Richard Levi helped himself to a half century off 44 deliveries, while run machine Hashim Amla scored 32. The two openers stayed unbeaten and chased the target down in a mere 12.3 overs. Kallis for his superlative bowling performance was adjudged man of the match.
