Report: Apple began mass production of mini iPad

There's no official confirmation that a smaller version of the iPad is actually on its way, but the rumors are heating up as we get closer to the gadget's expected announcement date. According to a report, production on the unannounced tablet has even?already started.

The Wall Street Journal's Lorraine Luk writes that "people with knowledge of the situation" claim that Apple's Asian component suppliers have kicked off mass production of the device's parts.

According to the sources, this smaller version of the iPad will have a 7.85-inch display with a lower resolution than the third-generation iPad. (This means that the tablet would not have a "Retina" display, as previous rumors have already suggested.)

The only other detail we believe we know about this smaller iPad is that it will very likely use a Lightning connector, just like the iPhone 5, rather than the older 30-pin connector found on current iPad models. ?9to5?Mac's Seth Weintraub and Apple watcher?John Gruber?do also?suggest that chances are high that this smaller tablet will look a lot like a large iPod Touch, with?a smaller bezel, but the operating system will likely be identical to a standard-size iPad.

We might not have to wait too long to find out what's true and what's not about the mini iPad rumors though.?According to Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt, a?major Apple investor claims to have heard from multiple sources that members of the press will receive invitations to an Apple event on Oct. 10. Some informed guesswork?suggests that this would mean that the actual event would have to take place on Oct. 17?and that whatever's announced would likely hit shelves on the Friday of the following week, which would be Oct. 26.

Given this expected timeline, it's no surprise that Apple might've given its suppliers the?green-light?to start production of the so-called "iPad Mini."

Scoop: GoDaddy quietly kills its cloud computing business ? Cloud ...

GoDaddy has decided to close its Cloud Servers cloud computing product. The offering had been around for less than a year, although the company is attempting to integrate some of the technology into the next generation of its flagship hosting service.

Perhaps web-hosting giant GoDaddy wasn?t cut out to be a cloud computing provider after all. According to an internal email shared with me by an anonymous ex-employee, the company has decided to shutter its Cloud Servers product offering after less than a year.

The email highlights GoDaddy?s focus on winning small business customers and the apparent ill fit of Cloud Servers for that goal. ?After reviewing all of our hosting products, we decided to double-down on our shared hosting and site builder products and invest to win in these spaces,? it reads. ?As part of this focus, we will discontinue Cloud Servers as a stand-alone product.?

GoDaddy has confirmed the decision in an email to me via a statement from CIO Auguste Goldman:

??We are focused on SMBs and SMBs don?t use this product the way we are offering it now. So, in the weeks ahead, it won?t be a stand-alone product in and of itself. However, we plan to continue developing cloud technology into our other hosted products.

?We will continue to support existing Cloud Server?customers in a variety of ways.?

This type of decision is one of the classic risks of cloud computing, where a service might be here today and gone tomorrow. Services rarely shut down immediately, thus leaving users without a chance to reclaim their data or code and move it elsewhere (well, except in the case of MegaUpload), but an eventual transition to a new service is still necessary nonetheless. Recent examples of cloud services shutting down include Motorola?s ZumoDrive cloud-storage service, the Slicehost on-demand servers service (by Rackspace) and, nearly, TextDrive (by Joyent), which was saved at the last minute.

The GoDaddy email mirrors Goldman?s statement on this issues, saying the company is ?identifying the best ways to support customers who need to transition from Cloud Servers. Once we identify these support paths, we?ll notify them of the product update.?

Serious complications in people with type 1 diabetes and ongoing poor blood sugar control

ScienceDaily (Oct. 2, 2012) ? Strategies implemented in high-income countries to improve blood glucose control in people with type 1 diabetes and so reduce complications, such as heart attacks, strokes, and early death, are working, but there is much need for further improvement, according to a study from Scotland published in this week's PLOS Medicine.

Using information from national databases representing over 20 000 patients from 2005 to 2008, Scottish researchers led by Helen Colhoun from the University of Dundee, found that people with type 1 diabetes have 2 to 3 times the risk of heart attacks, strokes, or premature death than the general population and that this increased risk is higher in women than in men. The authors found that in those with type 1 diabetes, the risk (chance) of having a cardiovascular event (heart attack or stroke) for the first time was 2.5 higher in men and 3.2 higher in women, than in the general Scottish population. Furthermore, in those with type 1 diabetes, death rates from any cause were 2.6 higher in men and 2.7 higher in women than in the general Scottish population.

The authors also found a high number of deaths from coma in younger people with diabetes (caused by either an extremely high or an extremely low blood sugar level) and two to three extra deaths per 100 people a year in those aged 60 to 69 years with type 1 diabetes.

Worryingly, the authors also found that the majority of patients in this Scottish dataset had poorly controlled blood glucose levels, with only 13% having HbA1c levels (a test that measures the blood sugar control over the previous 3 months) in the target range. People with type 1 diabetes also had similar levels of smoking and of being overweight -- risk factors of cardiovascular disease -- as the general population.

The importance of tight blood sugar control for minimizing complications from diabetes has been understood for almost two decades. Therefore, there is an urgent need to understand why so few people with type 1 diabetes in settings such as that studied here have good control of their blood sugar, and what can be done to improve this situation.

The authors say: "Although the relative risks for cardiovascular disease and total mortality associated with type 1 diabetes in this population have declined relative to earlier studies, type 1 diabetes continues to be associated with higher cardiovascular disease and death rates than the non-diabetic population."

They continue: "A striking feature of the data is the very low rate of achievement of glycemic control targets."

The authors add: "Risk factor management should be improved to further reduce risk but better treatment approaches for achieving good glycaemic control are badly needed."
