University official on leave for signing anti-gay marriage petition

The chief diversity officer at Gallaudet University was put on administrative leave Wednesday after the school learned she had signed a petition supporting efforts to reverse Maryland?s same-sex marriage law, media reports say.

Dr. Angela McCaskill signed the petition at her church after her preacher spoke against gay marriage, the Planet DeafQueer blog reported on Monday, citing a Gallaudet faculty member who first spotted the administrator?s name on the document. Voters in Maryland will decide on Nov. 6 whether to keep a state law passed earlier this year approving same-sex marriage.

?I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately. It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer; however, other individuals feel differently,? Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz said in a statement.

?I will use the extended time while she is on administrative leave to determine the appropriate next steps taking into consideration the duties of this position at the university. In the meantime an interim Chief Diversity Officer will be announced in the near future."

Gallaudet spokeswoman Catherine Murphy told Buzzfeed that the university did not have "a policy against political participation." When asked about the nature of the petition and if the university had any policy regarding such political participation, Murphy told NBC News in an email: ?For the moment we are sticking with this (Hurwitz) statement. Please understand that in an administrative personnel matter we won't be saying anything more until we get complete clarity on what took place.?

McCaskill was the first deaf African American female to earn a Ph.D. from Gallaudet, where she has worked for 23 years in various roles, including becoming the deputy to the president and associate provost of diversity and inclusion in 2011, according to her biography on the university website. She did not respond to an email seeking comment and it was not possible to leave a phone message.

Late Wednesday, the campaign seeking to keep the same-sex marriage law urged the university to reinstate McCaskill.

"We strongly disagree with the decision to put the chief diversity officer on leave and hope she is reinstated immediately," Josh Levin, campaign manager of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, said in a statement. "Everyone is entitled to free speech and to their own opinion about Question 6 (the referendum on the ballot), which is about treating everyone fairly and equally under the law."

Reaction to the news was mixed on the university?s Facebook page, with some wanting to give McCaskill another chance or to learn more about what happened, and others saying she shouldn?t be in the job.

Teddi Fishman, director of the International Center for Academic Integrity at Clemson University, said she would ?stop short of saying that this case necessarily involves a lack of integrity.?

?If a person is responsible for ensuring equal opportunities for students regardless of their gender or sexual orientation and that person goes on record as being opposed to equal opportunities for people based on their gender and sexual orientation, it certainly appears that there is some incongruity,? she wrote NBC News in an email.

However, she noted that people also have the right to participate in the democratic process regardless of their work obligations unless they have agreed otherwise or are legally prohibited from doing so. The issue of marriage equality is not the same as the task of ensuring equality in academic settings and some could argue there were reasons -- not based on discrimination -- for opposing gay marriage, she added.

?I would feel comfortable saying, however, that if I were supervising Dr. McCaskill, I would want to talk with her to make sure that her commitment to equal opportunity to all students does indeed extend to them all and to monitor the situation more carefully than I might have done had she not signed the anti-marriage petition,? she said.

A Baltimore Sun poll in late September found that Maryland voters favored legalizing same-sex marriage, 49 percent to 39 percent. The survey of 804 likely voters was conducted from Sept. 25 to 27 by research firm OpinionWorks. The margin of error was 3.5 percentage points.

?Mind your manners,? you may have heard the phrase uttered from you mother or grandmother a million times, but is it something that we as a society use today with our children? Manners seems to have gone by the way side much like other concepts that were so often used by those who have gone on before us.

We must get back to the basics of life and what is really important in life, especially back to our Biblical roots. The Bible teaches many of ?life?s basics? one of which is manners. Surprised? Don?t be, God has a plan for every aspect of our lives, including manners. They after all were his idea in the first place. He set it forth beginning with the Golden Rule beginning in Matthew 7:12, ?Do to others what you would have them do to you.?

God also set forth instructions for us as parents about how we are to train our children, these scriptures include Proverbs 22:6, which says, ?Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.? We must do our part as parents and then leave the rest to God. However our part comes first. He commanded us in Deuteronomy that we were to model the actions that we wanted our child to have.

?Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you-they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.? Deuteronomy 32:46-47

This is living by the book, God?s Word, following his laws and precepts and teaching our children to do the same. As we often say to others, ?it begins at home?. We must being by teaching our children the basic manners of ?please? and ?thank you? and expand into more social concepts such as, dining etiquette and social introductions.

What is in your heart comes out in your actions. We have Jesus in our hearts and we want to show others him by our actions. This is where manners can be of much importance. However, not only does this learning of manners do wonders for other people who are around your child, but also for their own self esteem and confidence as well. After all, with Christ in our childrens? hearts and lives they can have all the confidence they need and when they present themselves as Godly and respectful individuals to others they can shine brightly. What mother wouldn?t be proud of that?

There are different types of gym flooring such as rubber, foam, PVC tiles, carpet and hardwood flooring with appropriate padding.
Artificial Football Turf
Today, there are a variety of turfs used for different sports. Synthetic football turf has been used for a number of years now. For example the Astro turf was made in the year 1966. A good artificial turf depends on the weight of the fiber, its thickness and the pile height. Natural grass is not suitable for a football pitch if it is expecting over 300 hours of use a year. Bald patches and mud will appear with overuse. Therefore an artificial football playing turf is the solution. You can play on a synthetic pitch all year round and in any weather condition and the synthetic pitches are less costly and reduces the labor charge and can dry easily that is why now a days artificial pitches are preferred more than natural grass pitches. Field turf looks like natural grass and is made of polyethylene blades. A synthetic pitch is durable and can be used for many years; its also versatile as it can be used for multiple purposes. Although the initial expenses of an artificial football pitch will be more than natural grass, this offsets the maintenance costs and requires less labor, time and equipment to maintain it.
Types of Tennis Surfaces
Tennis surfaces can be made of many different surfaces and each type of surface affects how you play. A grass court is slippery and the fastest. It causes the tennis ball to slide more and rebound lower than usual. The ball bounce will determine the health of the grass and when it was mowed. Grass courts are not used frequently as it is costly to maintain and also requires time to dry after a rainfall. Hard courts are common tennis courts and are made of plastic, asphalt or cement. The ball bounce can be predicted better on these courts. On clay courts, the ball bounce is slow and the forward motion is less. Matches can take longer time to finish and is favored by players who are defensive. Carpet courts are generally used only for indoor tennis. The surface depends on the thickness, materials and texture of the carpet.
