ZTE Fury (Sprint)

The ZTE Fury offers fast performance, plenty of features, and good battery life, all for less than $20. The tradeoff is a poor camera and call quality that is just okay. It's an inexpensive, reliable Android smartphone for Sprint users on a budget?just make sure to take a close look at the sale rack before buying.

Design and Call Quality
Plain and simple, the ZTE Fury measures 4.7 by 2.5 by .5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.9 ounces. The phone is encased in a thick layer of soft-touch black plastic, with silver accents running along the edges and a pattern made of tiny gray circles on the back. It isn't rugged, but it feels like it can withstand more abuse than average, fragile smartphone. There are four capacitive touch buttons below the Fury's 3.5-inch, 480-by-320-pixel display. While the screen looks sharp and bright enough, that resolution is on the low side. The phone's on-screen keyboard is a little small, but still usable.

The Fury is a tri band EV-DO Rev. A (800/850/1900 MHz) device with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi. It can also be used as a mobile hotspot to provide a 3G connection to up to five different devices with the appropriate service plan. Reception on the Fury is average, though call quality is slightly below. Voices are nice and loud in the phone's earpiece, though somewhat fuzzy and harsh. Calls made with the phone showed average noise cancellation, but voices were muffled and distant. The speakerphone sounds fine and is just loud enough to use outdoors. Calls also sounded fine through a?Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset ($129, 4 stars), and voice dialing worked well. Battery life was good at 8 hours and 6 minutes of talk time.

Processor and Apps
Running Android 2.3.6 (Gingerbread), there's no word yet on an update to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) for the Fury, so I wouldn't count on it in the very near future. ZTE has done almost nothing to the version of Android running here. There's not much bloatware or preinstalled apps, aside from Sprint ID, which allows you to install "ID packs" on your phone that include applications, ringtones, wallpapers, and widgets. This lets you keep your phone looking plain Jane if you prefer stock Android, or jazz it up with something a little different. Interestingly, the phone also has a setting for Emergency Alerts, where you can choose to be notified of Amber alerts, extreme alerts, and severe alerts.

The Fury is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 MSM8655 processor. This is a faster CPU than you'll find in many other budget smartphones, though still no match for dual-core. Even so, the Fury turned in rather good benchmarks for a single-core device; credit the lower screen resolution and lack of UI modification.

All of the standard Android apps are here. You get Google Maps Navigation for free voice-enabled, turn-by-turn GPS directions. The phone syncs email, calendars, and contacts for Gmail and Microsoft Exchange accounts, and works with many other popular email accounts. And the Fury's solid performance means you shouldn't have trouble running most of the 450,000+ apps available from the Google Play market.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
The Fury comes with 2.59GB of available internal memory. There?s also a 2GB microSD card preloaded in the slot beneath the battery cover; my 32GB and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine as well. The standard 3.5mm headphone jack means you can use the Fury with just about any pair of wired headphones. Music sounded fine over wired earbuds as well as through?Altec Lansing BackBeat?Bluetooth headphones ($99, 3.5 stars). The music player is stock Android, and I was able to play AAC, MP3, OGG, and WAV files, but not FLAC or WMA. The Fury was also able to play back all of our video test files at resolutions up to 720p.

The camera is a big disappointment. It's a 5-megapixel shooter with an LED flash. Shutter speeds are agonizingly slow, at an average of 2.1 seconds to snap a photo. And after that wait, photos look dim and somewhat soft. The video camera is worse. Recorded videos max out at VGA (640-by-480 pixels) resolution, and play back at a choppy 13 frames per second.

Camera aside, the ZTE Fury is a good choice for first-time smartphone users, but be sure to look at your other options carefully. Right now, you can get the HTC EVO 3D?(3 stars), LG Marquee?(3.5 stars), or Nexus S 4G?(3 stars) for free. All of those phones are a step up from the Fury, with nicer displays, better cameras, and comparable, if not faster, processors. But the phones on sale chage often, while the Fury will retain its inexpensive price tag, making it a reliable bet for buyers on a budget. The Samsung Conquer 4G?($49.99, 4 stars) is another good option, and gets you a better camera and faster 4G WiMAX data speeds than the Fury for just $30 more.

Benchmarks
Continuous talk time: 8 hours 6 minutes

Lea Lane: Good News: A Perspective

I'm no Pollyanna, but I try to be a member of the glass-half-full crowd, or even, "be grateful that at least there's water in the glass" crowd. By striving to be positive I don't stress out as much about the many things that go wrong in life, both large and small.

But I discovered something interesting the other day, maybe already obvious to you, but something that I never thought of before, and something that hasn't been in keeping with a positive mindset.

When there are two elements, most of us usually preface our comment by saying "Well, there's good news and bad news." And I always used to say it that way, in that order, with the good news first.

For example:

"How did your job search go?"

"Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that I got a job. The bad news is that the job is shoveling elephant manure on the night shift."

A downer.

Instead, I discovered I felt more positive when I was in a good news/bad news situation by simply changing the order of the two sentences, starting with the bad news and ending with the good:

"How did your job search go?"

"Well bad news, good news. My job is shoveling elephant manure on the night shift. But, the good news is that I got a job!"

Test it out. And you don't have to preface the statement by saying "bad news... good news." Just change, "I was going on a picnic but it's cold," to "It's cold, but I'm still going on a picnic."

"I didn't get the loan in time to buy the car," to "I didn't buy the car yet, but I'm getting the loan."

"It's not cancer, but I still have to have the tumor removed in a five-hour operation," to "I have to have the tumor removed in a five-hour operation, but it's not cancer."

I know, we can overdo it, and some situations are so bad that there seems to be no good news possible: "My mother just died after a long, difficult illness."

You'd have to really stretch your mind to find some good there. But you can, if you want to and if you stop and realize that there can be a bit of good to hold on to in even the worst of times: "My mother died after a long, difficult illness, but she had a remarkable life and was loved by us all."

So take a chance and try finding some good even in most situations by just switching the order of events you're retelling to a "bad news, good news" mode. Maybe life won't seem quite as difficult when you frame things that way, and by ending on a positive note the positivity may spill over to a better attitude in general.

The bad news is that we need to use every trick possible to keep a positive attitude in this difficult life. The good news is, we can.

FreedomPop offering 1GB of free wireless data, hopes you?ll pay for more

The new freemium 4G service could be perfect for those wanting to dip their toes into the mobile data market

Sick of?paying out the nose for wireless data? Well, one enterprising startup may have an option for you:?FreedomPop, a wireless service set to roll out in July and September, wants to offer you 1GB worth of 4G WiMAX and?LTE wireless data service absolutely free.

The service operates on a "freemium" basis ? certain aspects, like the 1GB of data, are free.? If you go over the 1GB allotment, you will be charged a fee estimated to be in the range of 1 cent per megabyte. You can also pay for more data in advance, and features will exist where you can share some free data with other users.

FreedomPop will offer three different flavors of broadband: a USB dongle that allows you to connect your computer to the internet, a WiFi hotspot device, and an iPhone case that allows you to override the phone's existing network and use it as a FreedomPop hotspot. All three will require you pay a refundable deposit.

While FreedomPop isn't the first company to try a free wireless data model ? you can currently get?free service from NetZero ? they are the first to up the ante to offer 1GB for free. There are some major drawbacks, however. FreedomPop will be using?Clearwire's network, so the range of the free wireless service will be limited to the 70 major cities currently serviced. Still, if you're interested in giving the freemium service a whirl (and live in or near a major city), you can pre-register for FreedomPop?on their website.

ACLU: FBI 'outreach' program spied on Muslims

Muslims gather to pray at the Omar al Farouk Mosque in November 2010 in Anaheim, Calif. In that Southern California community, tensions flared after an FBI informant, Craig Monteilh, infiltrated mosques to gather information.

By Kari Huus, msnbc.com

The FBI in San Francisco used a public relations program billed as "mosque outreach" to collect information on the religious views and practices of Muslims in Northern California and then shared the intelligence with other government agencies, according to FBI documents obtained by civil rights groups.

The heavily redacted documents, released after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, raise "grave constitutional concerns," said Hina Shamsi, director of the National Security Project of the American Civil Liberties Union.

"In San Francisco, we have found that community outreach was being run out of the FBI?s intelligence division and was part of a secret and systematic intelligence gathering program,? conducted without any apparent evidence of wrongdoing," said Shamsi. "The bureau?s documentation of religious leaders' and congregants' beliefs and practices violates the Privacy Act, which Congress passed to protect Americans? First Amendment rights."

The Privacy Act limits sharing of personal information among government agencies and the length of time it can be retained. In this case, the information shared included religious beliefs and affiliations, which the ACLU argues is entirely out of bounds.

The ACLU is calling for the Department of Justice?s inspector general to investigate alleged violations of the Privacy Act in the San Francisco Division and determine the scope of such activity nationwide.

The FBI San Francisco defended its agents' actions, saying the information "was collected within the scope of an authorized law enforcement activity."

The ACLU of Northern California filed the FOIA lawsuit with the Asian Law Caucus and the San Francisco Bay Guardian newspaper, leading to the release of the FBI documents on Tuesday.

Meant to foster trust
The documents indicate that FBI was keeping records of conversations and activities within mosques and other Muslim organizations from 2004 through 2008, information that was provided by employees engaged in the outreach programs.

The announced intention of the FBI outreach programs is to foster trust between law enforcers and members of the Muslim community so they can work together to fight crime and avert terrorism.

An earlier ACLU report on community outreach prompted FBI national headquarters to issue a release stating that its policy requires separate operations and databases for intelligence gathering and community outreach programs.

A large proportion of the information was labeled "positive intelligence," which indicates that the FBI intends to keep it in its intelligence database, the ACLU report explained.

Many documents were marked "secret,"?even though they appeared to include only mundane information. Some documents?were marked "disseminated outside," but did not specify the recipients.

Among the findings contained in the FBI documents:

  • A 2005 FBI memorandum from a meeting with a congregant at Islamic Center of Santa Cruz, documented his name and religious affiliation and detailed?other worshipers' financial contributions to the center and community support for Islam.
  • The subject of a sermon and congregants' discussions about a property purchase for a new mosque were gathered by FBI agents during five visits to Seaside Mosque in 2005.
  • Documents based on four "outreach" meetings between FBI personnel and representatives of the South Bay Islamic Association note discussions about the Hajj pilgrimage and "Islam in general."
  • Documents based on FBI contacts with representatives of the Bay Area Cultural Connections???formerly the Turkish Center Musalla???describe the group?s mission and activities, and the ethnicity of its members. A memo indicates the FBI searched for?the cell phone number of one participant in the meeting in?the LexisNexis records database and Department of Motor Vehicle records, obtaining detailed information about him, including his date of birth, Social Security number, address and home telephone number.

There is no indication that the subjects were informed that the information was being collected or shared with other law enforcement agencies, the ACLU said.

The FBI in San Francisco declined a request for an interview, but released a statement by Assistant Director Michael Kortan. In addition to stating that the information gathering?abided by laws and agency rules, it indicated that?it had adjusted its outreach program since the period covered by the documents.

"Since that time, the FBI has formalized its community relations program to emphasize a greater distinction between outreach and operational activities," Kortan said.

Outreach to 'generate goodwill'
"FBI San Francisco dedicated a full-time, non-agent employee to community outreach efforts in the fall of 2007," said a second statement from Stephanie Douglas, FBI special agent in charge. "The community outreach program is designed to generate goodwill and foster relationships with a wide-range of groups in the communities we serve."

But documents still under analysis by the ACLU indicate FBI San Francisco continued to mingle outreach and intelligence gathering through 2011, according to Shamsi.

The documents?undermine trust for genuine outreach programs, said Farhana Khera, executive director of Muslim Advocates, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that makes policy recommendations to lawmakers and leaders.

"I think the recent documents further underscore how well-intentioned community leaders who talk with the FBI are instead the targets of this broad, intelligence-gathering effort," she said. "It?s easy to see then how that community leader who had a conversation with an FBI agent finds himself being harassed when traveling or crossing borders."

"These documents are illustrating the actual experiences of American Muslims that we have been hearing for a number of years now," she added. ?

The findings are the latest? from an ACLU examination of how?the FBI has conducted surveillance in the wake of 9-11 and a campaign to expose cases that they say threaten civil liberties.

In FBI documents obtained through other Freedom of Information lawsuits, the rights groups has highlighted systematic surveillance of Muslim student organizations and individuals and what it considers anti-Muslim bias in training materials being used by the FBI ?now the subject of internal FBI investigation, according to published reports.

'Count the mosques'

In a separate case, documents uncovered by The Associated Press?revealed that the New York Police Department conducted an extensive surveillance campaign?of the Muslim population there, keeping secret files on individuals, businesses, mosques?and organizations. Those findings have provoked outrage from many Muslim and civil rights groups, which have called on the Obama administration to intervene.

Greater FBI scrutiny of Muslim communities goes back to shortly after the 9/11 attacks, when then FBI Director Robert Mueller instructed field offices across the country to "count the mosques" and set up investigative goals accordingly, according to an article?by investigative reporter Michael Isikoff.

Rules governing FBI surveillance were relaxed in 2008 to give more leeway to FBI "assessments" ? a stage of surveillance that takes place before the opening of a formal investigation. These more lenient standards, critics say, allow information gathering on individuals without probable cause.

Rights groups are asking the Department of Justice to restore stricter rules on surveillance and to prohibit racial and religious profiling in all cases.

"What we need is for the FBI to go back to the standards set after the Hoover-era abuses.? guidelines put in place that required the FBI to engage in surveillance only if there?s evidence of wrongdoing," said Khera of Muslim Advocates.

Climate change report: time to start preparing for the worst

It's time to start protecting people from the impact of severe-weather events, a panel says. The report offers further evidence of how the climate change conversation is shifting.?

Girding communities now to bounce back from droughts, floods, heat waves, and severe storms they currently experience will go a long way to helping them adapt to long-term global warming.

That is the broad message contained in a 582-page report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and released Tuesday.

The report surveys the current state of scientific knowledge about the impact global warming could have on nine types of extreme-weather events. The report spends the majority of its nine chapters exploring ways ? from simple networks to spread warnings of a looming tropical cyclone to broader social changes, such as educating women and including them in community planning ? to reduce the risk to people and property from weather extremes.

The volume is the strongest signal yet of a sea change in thinking during the past decade on adaptation to climate change.

Although the IPCC has dealt with the subject all along, adaptation is seen by many activist groups on global warming as a cop-out ? a topic aimed at diverting attention from the need to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

But researchers have indicated that even if countries slammed the brakes on emissions today, the climate would continue to warm because carbon dioxide remains in the atmosphere for centuries. The gradual-but-relentless build-up of CO2 in the atmosphere since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution is an indication that humans are pumping it into the air faster than natural processes can remove the excess.

Increasingly, some degree of adaptation has come to be seen as a necessity, not a diversion.

Teasing out trends in extreme weather and identifying global warming's fingerprint are challenging, acknowledges Thomas Stocker, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Bern in Switzerland and co-chair of the IPCC working group that reviews the state of climate science. By definition, extreme weather events are relatively rare and require observations ? of consistent, high quality ? over long periods of time and with ?extremely good spatial coverage,? he says.

But enough data have been accumulating during the past 60 years at least to begin the process. The report examines observed trends for the nine weather and climate features it considered, the likelihood that global warming is evident in the trends, and projections of how those trends may play out through the end of the century.

Some of the highest confidence levels across these three categories are for trends in extreme temperatures, with somewhat lower confidence levels for extreme precipitation.

While uncertainties remain, many of the approaches communities and countries can take to adapt to weather extremes fall into what Chris Field, co-chair of a second IPCC working group that focuses on impacts of climate change, dubs ?low regrets measures.? These measures will provide significant benefits regardless of the factors underlying extreme-weather events.

Indeed, the cost from extreme-weather events has been rising.

Between 1970 and 1989, losses from disasters of all sorts averaged about $5 billion a year globally, notes Mark Way, who heads sustainable-development efforts in the Americas for the reinsurance firm Swiss Re. Since 1989, losses have averaged some $30 billion a year, driven in large part by weather-related disasters. Last year, losses in the US hit $35 billion, more than half the $61 billion in losses from severe weather globally.

At this point, the increase in losses has more to do with rapid population growth and a build-up of wealth in some of the most vulnerable areas ? along coastlines, for instance ? than with global warming, both?the IPCC report and Mr. Way note.

Paramore, Evanescence Face Off In Musical March Madness' Elite Eight

Coheed and Cambria renew their MMM rivalry with Tokio Hotel, and Green Day look to defend their title. Voting is now under way!

Well, here we go. It's Elite Eight time in MTV's Musical March Madness, and it's not exactly hyperbole to call it the greatest round of eight in tournament history.

Why? Well, after voting in the Sweet 16 closed Tuesday at midnight, we bid farewell to both MMM favorites (30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park — you will be missed) and proverbial flies in the ointment (Semi Precious Weapons, F---ed Up, we're sad to see you go), leaving us with only the biggest and baddest bands in the land. And now, finally, they're facing each other, with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

Voting in all Elite Eight matchups is now underway, and polls close at midnight ET Thursday. Here's a look at each regional final, all of which promise to be totally epic — especially the Coheed/Tokio Hotel tilt, which might melt our servers. Let's get right to the action!

Vote for your favorite band, discuss and share on Facebook and Twitter in the MTV Musical March Madness interactive bracket!

Midwest The mighty Midwest appropriately comes down to #5 My Chemical Romance versus #7 Metallica, a matchup that seemed all but preordained from the minute the brackets were revealed. MCR have proven themselves to be the most-consistent band in MMM history, and with a win here, they'll advance to their third-straight Final Four. All that's standing in their way is Metallica, a band that's battled every step of the way — they've been taken to the wire in practically every round, surviving tough challenges from Guns N' Roses, Sum 41 and Five Finger Death Punch — and now appears to believe that no one can stop them. MCR has yet to truly be challenged in MMM 2012, but we think that trend ends here. Will My Chem continue to roll, or will Metallica's dream run continue to the Final Four? We'll find out over the next 48 hours!

West Returning MMM champs Green Day look to move one step closer to defending their crown, as they draw upset-minded "American Idol" fave Adam Lambert in the West final. After sleepwalking through much of their Sweet 16 matchup with another "Idol-ite" (James Durbin), Green Day turned it on late and advanced. Lambert, on the other hand, has shocked pretty much everyone (except for his Glamberts, of course), and sped through each round with relative ease — his throttling of MMM faves Panic! at the Disco in the round of 16 was particularly impressive.

Can he march on to the Final Four? Or will Green Day show the heart of a true champion and advance? This one might be closer than most folks think, and, truly, it wouldn't surprise us to see Lambert pull off the upset of upsets here. Your move, Green Day fans.

East In the history of Musical March Madness, there are no two more storied bands than Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria, who continue to dominate year after year. Shoot, Coheed even won the 2010 title, outlasting My Chemical Romance in a truly epic championship game. Of course, as any Tokio Hotel fan will tell you, Coheed only got to that championship game by knocking off TH in the most hotly contested (and, some might say, dubious) Final Four battle in tournament history. They've been waiting two years to get revenge, and, well, here's their chance. Twelfth-seeded Tokio takes on #10 Coheed in the East regional final, and only one band can advance to the Final Four. Vengeance. Acrimony.

Rampant accusations of cheating. This one's been in the works for 24 months now, and it's already living up to the hype (you should see our Twitter feed). We're just going to stand back and watch in awe. It's going to be a great show.

South After so many upsets in the early rounds of the tournament, the South was the only region where things played out according to plan, meaning that the region comes down to #1 Evanescence versus #2 Paramore, a clash of two female-fronted bands with truly fanatic fanbases. Both survived tough challenges in the round of 16 (Ev outlasted Linkin Park, and Paramore pulled away from 30 Seconds to Mars), and now, both know a trip to the Final Four is within reach. Paramore have been down this path before, and came oh so close to taking the title last year. Will 2012 be the year they finally take home the MMM championship? Top-seeded Evanescence stands in their way, and they've been getting stronger with each round. Sadly, only one of these bands will move on, while the other will be forced to spend an entire year wondering what might have been. To come this close and lose? Well, that's true heartbreak. Sure to be another tightly contested battle, this one will undoubtedly come right down to the wire (the polls are already super close), and should live up to all the advance billing.

MTV's 2012 Musical March Madness tournament reaches the Elite Eight! Voting runs until midnight ET on Thursday, March 29, and winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it'll be up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM or by downloading one of our custom badges — but get ready, it only gets more difficult from here on out.

FSOU ? The Importance of Visualizing your Readers | FutSail Online ...

One of the keys to writing successfully has nothing to do with prose, headlines, fact checking, or opinion. Rather, you must win the battle before the battle starts. You must make a very important decision: who are your readers?

This lecture is in English. Yes, Google Translator could butcher it for other folks, but my intended readers speak and write English. Why? Money. Money. Money. The English, Aussies, Canadians, and Americans have, shall we say, le Money. Why does that matter? Sponsors. Sponsors want to run ads for sites that feature articles written by and for people with money. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg.

The language decision also reflects proficiency: you should probably write in your native language(s). However, even within languages, you must still visualize and select a privileged group of persons to whom you direct your prose. And that is why you should always strive to write for the Augusta National crowd.

For folks not in the know, Augusta National is an exclusive country club in the South of the United States that does not admit women (and has few minority members). Why? Probably a dash of elitism, racism, and sexism. However, bottom line, these white dudes are loaded. These are the folks that sponsors want to reach. These WASPs are so rich they pay assistants to jump in their pool of golden coins and look down on Scrooge McDuck. They are your dream audience. Thus, whenever you write, you must ask yourself ? what would a rich and privileged white man think? Would he agree with me? Would he like my conclusions? How can I attract and not scare off his eyeballs?

On the other hand, you can?t be too obvious. Twitter and the internet have unfortunately allowed for minorities and women to consort like never before ? they have formed a powerful alliance that can get your writing written off. Granted, sometimes it?s good to get some ?negative hits?, but that?s covered in a later lecture on ?Liverpool FC _____ ?. For now, the trick to catering to the Augusta National crowd without getting boycotted is subtlety.

Here?s a prime example and something you should copy whenever possible: the ?crazy ex-girlfriend analogy.? Basically, when a star player is volatile, mercurial, and unstable, you should write an article comparing him to some girl you briefly dated or messed around with in college that was ?unstable? but ?very attractive.? This tactic is beautiful because you somewhat subtly treat and depict women a chattel ? the ?college ex-girlfriend? is a piece of meat to be consumed and spit out, not an actual human being for whom you should have sought psychiatric help or an intervention.

Also, you get to throw jabs at the people in this world who are legitimately depressed, bipolar, or suffer from a mental ailment. If Augusta National is you ally, then the mentally ill are the perfect enemy. They are as politically powerless as they come, they only occasionally read sports writing, and the majority probably have very little money. Ideally, the player in question will have an undiagnosed mental ailment and you can kill two birds with one stone.

Lastly, and also importantly, the ?crazy ex? analogy is heterosexist. Think about it for a second. Reverse the analogy. If your significant other started to act weird, would you compare her to Randy Moss? When you call friends to complain about your significant other, do you say ?My wife was such a Terrell Owens today?? No. Why not? Because you indirectly would be accepting and alluding to a same-sex relationship. Obviously, that doesn?t fly with the Augusta National crowd. Therefore, try to keep it sexist, heterosexist, and prey on the mentally ill whenever possible.

Before you write, ask yourself two questions: 1) Who do I want to read this? 2) Do they have money? It?s that simple?!

Your job is your credit is key to your degree!

Marbury v. Medicine

In a crass partisan sense, a decision to avoid the constitutional issues would keep the health care law?and the ?Obamacare? issue?alive for Republicans to run against in the fall, an outcome the president?s political advisers might not wholeheartedly welcome. Beyond that, in order to decide the case on Anti-Injunction Act grounds, the court would have to hold that the mandate operates as a tax?still more political grist for the Republican mill. These are not legal considerations, of course, but as Marbury shows, the greatest justices are always aware of the political implications of their rulings.

Kim Kardashian May Press Charges Against Flour Bomber

Kim Kardashian took it in stride last Thursday night when a young woman hit her with a bag of flour as she was walking the red carpet -- but that doesn't mean Kim thinks "flour bombing" is a laughing matter. In fact, after initially declining to press charges against the woman, Kardashian now says she might file charges in the next few days.

Aspirin: High or low dose following heart attack?

ScienceDaily (Mar. 26, 2012) ? Researchers report no significant difference in high versus low dose aspirin in preventing recurring cardiovascular events.

Each year, more than one million Americans suffer a heart attack and nearly all patients are prescribed a daily aspirin and an antiplatelet medication during recovery. However, the optimal aspirin dose has been unclear. Now, new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) reports that there is no significant difference between high versus low dose aspirin in the prevention of recurring cardiovascular events in patients who suffer from acute coronary syndromes (ACS), which are characterized by symptoms related to obstruction in coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart.

These findings are presented at the American College of Cardiology Scientific Sessions on March 24, 2012.

"We observed no difference between patients taking a high dose versus a low of aspirin as it relates to cardiovascular death, heart attack, stroke or stent thrombosis," said Payal Kohli, MD,

cardiology fellow at BWH and researcher in the TIMI Study Group, who is the lead author on this study. "Interestingly, we did find a dramatic difference in practice patterns of physicians in North America compared to those in the rest of the world," Kohli said. "North American physicians prescribed a high dose of aspirin for two-thirds of all their patients, while the exact reverse was true of the rest of the world. International physicians prescribed a low dose of aspirin to more than two-thirds of their patients." Dr. Stephen D. Wiviott, a cardiologist at BWH and researcher in the TIMI Study Group, is the senior author on the study.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 11000 patients from around the world that were enrolled in the TRITON-TIMI 38 trial, which randomized ACS patients to receive either clopidigrel or prasugrel, two different antiplatelet medications. Some patients were prescribed high doses of aspirin following a heart attack, while others, low doses. The aspirin dose was prescribed at the clinician investigator's discretion and the analysis included 7,106 patients who received low dose aspirin, defined as 150 mg or less, and 4,610 patients who received high dose aspirin, defined as 150 mg or more. Researchers reported that there was no significant difference observed in the prevention of the combination of heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular death or the prevention of stent thrombosis between the groups that received high or low dose aspirin. Prasugrel was more effective at preventing major adverse cardiovascular events than clopidogrel, regardless of whether patients received low or high dose aspirin.

Researchers also present that patients who received high dose aspirin were more likely to have more cardiac risk factors and have higher cholesterol. Patients who received low dose aspirin were more likely to be white and have no prior history of high blood pressure.

The authors caution that because this is not a randomized study, there may be other treatment differences that could have affected the results and a randomized controlled trial would be needed to definitively establish that no difference existed in outcomes between aspirin dose regimens. These data are, however, consistent with previous reports.

The authors reinforce that all medication changes should be made only after discussion with your physician.

Relaxation: Simple Breathing Exercise | Simbeck Hampson ...

Relaxation: Simple Breathing Exercise

Clipped

image

I've been out of hospital a week now and I remember the doctors telling me before I left that relaxation was good and stress was not. I've been taking it easier than normal this week but I realise that I need to compensate using other tactics. I gave this breathing exercise a try today (thanks to +Mitch Joel for posting about it) and I found that it really helped, so I'm going to carry on doing it morning and night and whenever I feel stress brewing.

If you decide to give it a go let me know if it helped. I'll check back in next week on this topic and let you know how the week went.

Clipped (see link below):

This is the 4 ? 7 ? 8 breathing exercise:

Step 1: breathe out. Let it all out.

Step 2: breath in through your nose and fill your belly with air (let your belly push out) for 4 seconds.

Step 3: hold you breath for 7 seconds.

Step 4: release your breath slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds. Make sure that your tongue is resting behind your top middle teeth and you should pucker you lips and make a "blowing out" sound.

Step 5: repeat this 4-6 times.

For a Steal of a Roof, Choose Steel for Home Improvement

??? By : Danny C. Miller ?? zero times read
Submitted 2012-03-25 03:21:54 There is not much more important to a home than a good roof. Having a solid roof will help to provide protection for residents as well as contents from assaults from the elements. Primitive structures were first covered with thatch and skins, palm and banana leaves, and all of these techniques came with pros as well as cons. Roofs of wood, typically made of cedar, were primitive materials that were utilized on a massive scale and offered reliable materials for covering the roof, but they brought with them the hazard from fire.

As time went on, roofing materials began to evolve with the use of felt paper and asphalt that was offered in colors and impregnated with stone. This provided homeowners added choice, and choice is good right? Roofing materials range from tile, hand cut slate, and other metals including tin, zinc, copper, and even gold. Today's answer for great looking roofs that have a long life is steel.

Steel provides the roofing industry a substance that offers customers a permanent roofing option. Fire from below aside, a steel roof will protect a home from winds greater than 120 miles per hour, tornado, land slides and falling limbs, and will take more abuse than most other materials offered for roofing. Hail and ice, heavy snow loads and downpours are all withstood with the use of a name brand steel roof of good quality and set in place by a team of professional roofers.

It is simple to make the switch from traditional roofing material to steel, and homeowners receives many benefits. The risk of fire is reduced because steel is not ignited by embers that are often generated from a fireplace or a nearby wildfire. This also means that you can safely install those homemade solar panels you've always wanted (don't do that on a roof made of wood). Many insurance agencies also provide discounts to their customers who switch to steel roofing.

Easy installation should be addressed when talking about a steel roof. Generally, a new steel roof can be installed over the top of an already existing roof. Homeowners can realize good results from putting a steel roof right over a single layer of other roofing materials. Codes differ from one state to the next, and your local roofing professional will have the answers for you about what is accepted in your area. As time has gone by, engineers and designers have made perfect techniques for making metal roofs so that now they can be ordered or picked up in your much loved style. Steel roofing is often found taking the styles of slate and tile, and can even be ordered with the look of an old barn. Every homeowner can be pleased with what a steel roof will do for them.

High heats are used to seal today's finishes on steel roofing materials, and most are complete with a manufacturer's guarantee of twenty years from peeling and faded colors which is better than most appearance guarantees today. With the myriad of colors to select from, homeowners should be able to locate one that is appealing to them.

In those states where extreme sunshine is a problem, placing a steel roof in white on the home will help to reduce attic temperatures by as much as 50 degrees, and that equates to large reduction in costs of energy, and that is a good deal in modern economies. When you add ten to fourteen inches of insulation in the attic and elsewhere in the house with a steel roof you can take charge of and control the costs of cooling and heating your home. Plus, if you install the solar panels I mentioned earlier, you'll save even more money.

Steel roofs are not susceptible to break down from exposure to the sun like conventional roofing does. This creates added value for residents in southern and southwestern states where hotter month heat and the blowing winds that permeate western America can place great stress on roofs. Because steel roofing is more cost effective than other materials, homeowners can use the immense savings on other home ugdates and repairs.

Typically, a cedar roof runs about $500 per 100 square feet to install, and when compared to $125 per 100 square feet for installing a steel roof, savings can be put to better use on a nursery or an array of solar panels. Of course, the Mrs. willdecide which. With savings that huge, anyone can benefit. Buildings, whether it is the house, garage, boat house or other out buildings can benefit from a steel roof.

The elements of steel roofing products are produced from designs that closely adhere to quality specifications and tolerance that assures an attractive product that is solid. Home improvements made with steel roofing only begin with the good looks it provides. With the strength that is inherent with a steel roof, loads of snow from Northern states and the monsoonal rains of the Southeast are carried well, and steel is not as heavy as the majority of other options in roofing materials which makes the installation process quicker and safer to achieve.

Professional roofers the country over offer steel as an alternative which is reasonably priced and the time needed to complete can create awe in the purchaser. Projects that could otherwise take a week to finish can be done in a matter of just a few days when you choose steel roofing.

Hailstone declared largest on record to hit Hawaii

National Weather Service

This hailstone was declared the largest on record to hit Hawaii.

By msnbc.com staff

At 4.25 inches long, 2.25 inches tall and 2 inches wide, a?hailstone that fell on the windward side of Oahu this month has been declared the largest?on record?to hit Hawaii, the National Weather Service announced.

Records for Hawaii go back to 1950 and the previous record was?a relatively puny 1 inch in diameter.

"The record-setting hailstone was dropped by a supercell thunderstorm on the windward side of Oahu and produced large hail in Kaneohe and Kailua," the service said in a statement.?"Numerous reports of hail with diameters of 2 to 3 inches and greater were reported."

"Hail to the size of golf balls and baseballs can only form within intense, thunderstorms called 'supercells'," the service added. "These supercells need warm, moist air to rise into progressively colder, drier air; as well as winds changing direction and increasing speed with increasing height off the ground. For both sets of conditions to exist at the same time in Hawaii is extremely rare, but did occur on March 9. Conditions were ideal for a supercell to form, which on National Weather Service radar imagery looked exactly like such storms in the central portions of the contiguous United States where severe hail larger than an inch in diameter is most common."

The March 9 supercell also spawned a tornado with winds of 60-70 mph in Lanikai and Enchanted Lakes on Oahu.

A hailstone that hit Vivian, S.D., on July 23, 2010, holds the U.S record for largest diameter (8 inches) and for weight (1.938 pounds). A hailstone in Aurora, Neb., on June 22, 2003, has the largest circumference (18.75 inches).

James Cameron makes final preparations for historic deep-sea dive

Weather permitting Saturday, explorer and filmmaker James Cameron could take his Deepsea Challenger to the bottom of the world, a place of perpetual cold, darkness, and abiding mystery.?

There was none of the usual Hollywood fanfare as James Cameron pulled up anchor and headed out to sea with his cast of adventurers last Monday on the final, spectacular leg of what will arguably be the greatest production he has ever worked on.

The departure of the?Mermaid Sapphire and Barakuda expedition vessels from Apra Harbor Guam, set the famously thrill-seeking film director on course to dive in a 12-ton submersible to the bottom of the world, a place of perpetual cold and darkness, life-threatening depth, and abiding mystery.

Inclement weather has kept Cameron from his goal over the last few days, prolonging the suspense and forcing him and his team of more than 60 support workers, technical advisers, scientists and family to wait it out for most of the week on the tiny Pacific atoll of Ulithi.

But with a possible window in the weather Saturday, the big moment could now be just hours away. Cameron, 57, and his?Deepsea Challenger?are ready to roll, he announced through National Geographic, his expedition partners, early this morning.

RELATED: Are you scientifically literate? Take our quiz

The journey will, if all goes well, take him seven miles below the surface of the Pacific Ocean to Challenger Deep, the lowest known point on Earth, located in the Mariana Trench south-west of Guam.

If he descends safely, he will be the first person to complete the journey alone to what he describes as ?a place less understood, more forbidding and perhaps less forgiving than the farthest reaches of space.?

Among his advisers currently aboard the?Mermaid Sapphire?mother-ship is a man who might be considered the ultimate authority on Challenger Deep, retired US Navy Captain Don Walsh, 80, who took the plunge aboard the steel bathyscaphe?Trieste?in 1960 with Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard.

No one had made the 36,070-foot trip before and no one has done it in the 52 years since.

What can Cameron expect? ?For us, it was rather like a foggy day in your car, where you turn the lights on and the fog comes back in your face,? says Capt. Walsh, whose?Trieste?crewmate died four years ago.

?As you descend, you lose your natural light fast and you?re in the abyss pretty quick ? no sunlight penetration at all. But if you turn off the lights, there?s this host of bio-luminescence generated by creatures of the abyss. It?s not that bright, like little snowflakes with light reflecting off them. As you pass down through them, the illusion is that they?re streaming up from below.?

Despite measuring 24feet in total,?Deepsea Challenger?affords its 6 foot, 2 inch pilot a space just 43 inches in diameter; the bigger one builds the pressurized compartment, the thicker its walls need to be and, therefore, the heavier the sub will become. Smaller equals lighter, equals slicker.
