GOP's Jim Petro a proud father of the bride - cleveland.com

I read the Saturday article titled "Petro's daughter marries female companion in Mass." with great interest, because it was about my father, Jim Petro, and my sister, Corbin Petro. The reaction of almost everyone in our family was: How is this newsworthy?

Still, I was frustrated that the slant of the article seemed to be that another conservative politician has had his chickens come home to roost. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Buried eight paragraphs down is a mention that my father was the first Ohio Republican to oppose 2004's Defense of Marriage Amendment, and that he supported civil unions in 2006. In fact, that position was virtually identical to President Barack Obama's up until a few days ago.

I've always been proud of my father's stance on those issues. They would be bold for any Republican today, let alone one running for governor six years ago.

We were overjoyed to watch my sister marry the love of her life earlier this month. I watched my dad hold back emotions as Corbin and Jessica exchanged vows. I know without a doubt that he had the same unrestrained happiness of any father on his daughter's wedding day.
