Newt Gingrich's daughters, Kathy Lubbers and Jackie Cushman, stopped by "The View" Monday to lend their support to their father's presidential campaign -- but talk inevitably turned to the rumors surrounding their parents' 1981 divorce.
Co-host Barbara Walters asked them about allegations that Gingrich served their mother, Jackie Battley, with divorce papers while she was in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment.
"He did go to take us to visit her in the hospital, but she wasn't having cancer surgery and he didn't have divorce papers," said Lubbers. "Unfortunately, it's urban legend."
"Is it true that he divorced her before she got cancer, is that the case?" Walters asked.
"She had cancer years before. At the time [of the divorce], she wasn't undergoing treatment," Cushman said.
The daughters were also asked about their father's second wife, Marianne Gingrich, and her recent claims that Newt asked her to have an open marriage in 1999.
"I think Dad answered that very well in the debate in South Carolina when he said it wasn't true," said Cushman. "Dad has been very good about this. He talks about making mistakes, and having sinned, and asking for God?s forgiveness -- he's been very open about that and I think people respond to that."
It's not the first time the daughters have spoken out about their father in response to criticism of his personal life. In January, shortly after Marianne Gingrich's explosive ABC News interview, Lubbers told ABC News correspondent Brian Ross that she and her sister had spoken to their father about the open marriage allegations and that they were "simply not true."
